Impact resistance

High impact resistance; Amorphous Carbon Fiber

Low modulus carbon fibers have unique properties and provide flexibility and higher toughnes than PAN based CF.

Low modulus carbon fibers, 55 to 155 GPa, provide flexibility and high impact resistance for composites. Low modulus carbon fibers have a high compressive strain to failure of 1.8 to 2.9%. In contrast, the value for PAN-based carbon fiber with a Young’s modulus of 230 GPa is about 1.4%. Therefore, the low modulus carbon fibers allow much more deformation against compressive stress. Hybrid laminates with low modulus carbon fibers PAN-based CF shows better impact resistance.
Amorphous Carbon Fiber is widely used for golf shaft to provide flexibility and impact strength.
